One of my favorite semiannual free events in Dublin is the Rising Stars Concert Series, sponsored by the Royal Dublin Society. In fact, when I attended my first event in Autumn 2013, I gushed about it on my old blog. When the spring show rolled around, I wrote about it again, this time for a local newspaper.
The Rising Stars program provides a hand-picked group of promising young musicians a chance to perform in a professional concert hall to a large audience—large because admission is free and RDS membership is not required. This performance experience is valuable for the development of these young musicians, and is a big stepping stone into a professional performing career.
The RDS also awards an annual bursary scholarship to one such young musician for study, travel, or other education and training expenses. At €15,000, it’s one of the largest in Europe.
The autumn Rising Stars gala this year looks to have a great lineup of young Irish talent. Piano, classical guitar, flute, violin, and voice are all on the program performing music from Bach to Chopin to the modern sounds of Messaien. I won’t be covering the show for the press, but I’ll be in my seat cheering on some of Ireland’s finest young performers. Without having paid a cent.
Free tickets for the autumn program can be booked via RDS event booking. Come on out to Ballsbridge Wednesday 25 November, 2015 to support this great event, and see the promising, talented performers of Ireland before they hit the big time and you can no longer afford to.
